Do you want better results with less stress?

It all started with a question: “what’s the simplest lean operating model needed to deliver consistent, effective results?”

Where it goes wrong

Over our 20+ years of consulting experience, we’d seen organisations struggling to achieve results with their performance improvement programmes.

At one extreme, some had gone for a comprehensive approach aimed at replicating what highly successful organisations like Toyota and others were doing and got bogged down in the complexity of all the various tools and methods.  What they were forgetting was that these organisations had taken many years to get to that operating model, and trying to introduce all of the elements in one programme was a bit like trying to “eat an elephant” in one bite.

At the other end of the scale were local level “continuous improvement” approaches started by getting individual teams to work on small improvements.  Taking a “fix what bugs you” approach they’d create great enthusiasm and engagement, good ideas and local improvements.  Yet these often failed to translate into real, sustainable improvements in customer service or organisational performance.  Their improvement efforts lacked focus.

In both cases the result was the same.  Lots of effort, some local success, but limited overall impact.  There must be a better way!

The foundations of a better way

Reflecting on all of this led me to create our “High Performance Foundations” programme, what experience has taught me are the “essential few” elements of an “operating system” that delivers consistent and sustainable high performance with the least effort.

There are two parts to the system:

“Team performance” – a clear framework within which teams can manage and improve their own performance

  • Clarity on what is required and how success is measured

  • Routines and practices to measure and manage performance

  • Standardised methods to drive consistency

  • A structured approach to problem solving and continuous improvement to identify and act on obstacles to delivering consistent high performance

“Leadership climate” – the behaviours and structures leadership needs to create for teams to perform

  • Sharing vision to set consistent direction

  • Modelling behaviours required for more effective ways of working

  • Creating the conditions for everyone to engage

  • Providing support to set everyone up to succeed

Put all of these together and a huge, sustainable change is possible in a relatively short timeframe:

  • Engaged, motivated and capable people

  • Better results delivered faster and with less effort

  • More satisfied customers

That’s what we mean by “high performance with ease!”
